Rage wins awardsIt's All the Rage, by the Melbourne writer Carl J. Sorheim, has won three top prizes at the Short+Sweet Gala Awards Final. The wild card entry was named best overall production, and Susie Hardgrave was named best director and Anthony Slater best actor. Mr and Mrs Metcalfe Enjoy the Music of Elton John, by the Sydney writer Frank Leggett, was named best play, and Karen Cobban was named best actress. The people's choice award went to Pride and Prejudice in 10 Minutes Flat, by Tim Hehir. About 170 short plays were shown during the two-month festival.Darin musicalA musical about the singer Bobby Darin will premiere on the Australian stage following news that the producer John Frost has acquired the rights to Dream Lover, a new musical by John-Michael Howson and Frank Howson. The jukebox musical will feature songs by Darin and others, including Splish Splash, As Long as I'm Singin', Mack the Knife and The Sea. Frost will workshop Dream Lover then produce the world premiere in Australia, in association with John and Barbara Gilbert. It is hoped international productions will follow.
