KRISTY Joyce's hard work paid off on Saturday night when she was crowned Miss World Illawarra at a gala ceremony at Wests Illawarra in Unanderra.

The Kanahooka 18-year-old was taken aback by the win.

"It was a complete shock and I had nothing prepared because I didn't think I had a chance," she said. "It was a really good experience. All the girls were friendly and I thought it might have been a bit catty, but it wasn't."

The Miss World pageant is more than just a beauty contest, combining charity work and public speaking sections. As a former kindergarten worker, Kristy's choice of charity was easy.

"My charity is the Make-A-Wish Foundation and I definitely have a passion for helping young kids. I'm really looking forward to getting out there and making a difference in the community."

Kristy will juggle her duties as Miss World Illawarra with her work for a Wollongong developer.

"I'm a very organised person so hopefully it won't be too much of a problem."
