STUDENTS at West Wallsend HS are hungry for victory after again coming off second-best during their inter-school gala day against students from Newcastle HS.

The schools went head-to-head in a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, tennis, netball, hockey, Oztag and rugby league. Newcastle High took overall honours for the second year running.

West Wallsend HS principal Ann Campbell described the day as a great success.

"It was great to see all the students participating and fair, all-round good-natured sportsmanship," Mrs Campbell said.

"I'd like to see it continue next year."

The hosts West Wallsend won in hockey and tennis but were defeated in basketball and went down in the soccer through a penalty shoot-out. The ultimate decider rugby league was won by Newcastle High.

In preparation for the event, students from West Wallsend's year 10 applied movement classes coached year 7 sporting teams.

"It was a good experience that taught me skills I can use later in life," said coach Erin Keating.

The event was hailed as a success by teachers, interns and students.

"It was a great and very positive day," said teacher Michael Chandler.
